Catherine Couperus,

Catherine was born and raised in Ontario. She began dancing at the age of 4 - competing and performing in Highland, Celtic Step and Irish dancing with the MacCulloch Dancers and the Sue Fay Healy School of Irish Dance. Catherine competed locally and internationally and is a two-time world qualifier in Irish dancing. An avid performer, Catherine has performed for such notable acts as The Chieftains, The Dropkick Murphys and Natalie MacMaster.  

 

Catherine has also toured internationally with “A Breath of Scotland” and “The Magic of Ireland” and went on to become Dance Director for The Magic of Ireland show for 2 years. For over 10 years, Catherine operated The Couperus Academy of Irish Dance in Ontario, sharing her love of dance with her students.

 

Since moving to Fort McMurray in 2009, Catherine has taught locally with other organizations and, in 2021, she opened the Fort McMurray Celtic Dance Studio, specializing in Highland, Irish, and Celtic Step dancing.

 

She is a Member with the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (B.A.T.D.), a Member with the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance (S.D.T.A.) in both Highland and Nationals dances, and a TCRG with An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha (C.L.R.G.).  

 

In addition to her dance background, Catherine also has 3 Bachelors of Arts degrees in English, French and Communications and, until the arrival of her daughter, she worked in the corporate education field at Keyano College and Suncor.
